Google Unveils Project Mariner: The Evolution of Web-Browsing AI

Google has recently introduced Gemini 2.0, a new machine learning model aimed at enhancing existing products and services, as well as powering new experiences. Among these innovations is Project Mariner, an AI agent capable of navigating within a web browser. Currently available as an experimental Chrome extension to a select group of trusted testers, Project Mariner aims to automate routine tasks.

In a demonstration, Mariner assisted in finding contact information for four outdoor companies, showcasing its potential to understand and reason across information on a browser screen, including text, code, images, and forms. However, the demo also highlighted areas for improvement, such as the need for specific instructions and the time taken to complete tasks.

Project Mariner was previously known as Project Jarvis, a computer-using agent designed to assist with tasks like booking flights. The transition from Jarvis to Mariner signifies Google’s ongoing efforts to refine and expand the capabilities of its web-browsing AI. This development follows Anthropic’s introduction of a similar feature for its Claude AI, indicating a growing trend towards AI agents that can interact with a wide range of tools and software programs.
