Instagram Unveils AI-Powered Video Editing Tools for 2024
Instagram plans to roll out generative AI video editing tools next year, enabling users to alter almost any aspect of their videos with simple text prompts.

Instagram is gearing up to introduce a groundbreaking generative AI editing feature in 2024, which will empower users to ‘modify nearly every element of your videos.’ This innovative technology is driven by Meta’s Movie Gen AI model, as revealed by Instagram head Adam Mosseri in a teaser post. The feature aims to equip creators with enhanced tools to revolutionize their content and materialize their creative visions without requiring extensive video editing expertise. Mosseri highlighted that the tool can execute adjustments based on a ‘simple text prompt.’
The teaser video showcases early research AI models that transform Mosseri’s outfit, background settings, and even his overall appearance—one scene even turning him into a felt puppet. More subtle changes, like adding new objects to the existing background or accessorizing Mosseri with a gold chain, are also demonstrated without altering the rest of his attire. The preview is impressive, with inserted backgrounds and clothing maintaining natural integrity even during rapid movements of Mosseri’s arms or face. However, the snippets shown are only a second long, leaving the full capabilities of the tool yet to be seen.
The early previews of OpenAI’s Sora video model also appeared highly polished initially, but the public results have not met those high expectations. We will have to wait until the launch to assess the true quality of Instagram’s AI video tools. Meta unveiled its Movie Gen AI video generator in October, promising to ‘preserve human identity and motion’ in the videos it creates or edits. This announcement followed similar models from competitors like OpenAI’s Sora and Adobe’s Firefly Video model, the latter already powering beta text-to-video editing tools within Premiere Pro. Meta has not specified the availability of Movie Gen, but Instagram is the first platform confirmed to utilize the text-to-video model.
